TomoTherapy (IMRT)

The Willis Knighton TomoTherapy Unit was the 4th in the United States and only the 6th in the world. The department has been named a Center of Excellence for TomoTherapy and is specifically researching stereotactic radiotherapy and radiosurgery with the device.

Our new, revolutionary system combines treatment planning, patient positioning, and treatment delivery into one. The Highly Integrated Adaptive Radiotherapy System, featuring a patented MLC and a rotating, helical beam, is designed to simplify the treatment process, and minimize dose to sensitive tissues. The Hi-Art System allows doctors to take a special CT scan just before each treatment, so they can verify the position and adjust the patient position as necessary to help ensure that the radiation is precisely directed to the target area. The Hi-Art system combines IMRT with a helical (or spiral) delivery pattern to deliver radiation from 360 degrees in accordance with the prescribed treatment plan. The IMRT System has two sets of interlaced leaves that move in and out very quickly to constantly modulate the intensity of the radiation beam. Meanwhile, the couch is also slowly advancing the patient through the gantry bore directing the beam from different directions. Click here to see more.

IMRT Peacock (IMRT) and Corvus System

The MIMiC Multileaf Collimator represents a major advance in the field of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). Used in conjunction with existing linear accelerators, the MIMiC supports the delivery of IMRT treatment plans introduced to the region at Willis Knighton. IMRT is becoming recognized as the most effective way to deliver highly conformal dose distributions. The complex inversely planned treatments utilized an advanced super-computer known as Corvus. The Peacock System is only available at highly specialized centers.Click here to see more.

Varian Varian 21EX Linear Accelerator

The most sophisticated and technologically advanced linear accelerator available in the world. This machine is the "workhorse" of the radiation department. Capable of delivering both low and high energy photon beams (6 and 18MV) and multiple energies of electron beams (6, 9, 12, 16, 20MeV). Our two linear accelerators are equipped with multiple attachments, some of which are the first of their type utilized for clinical treatments anywhere in the world known as "Platinum" units, these two are unsurpassed in their accuracy, delivery rate and reliability.

Millennium Millennium MLC-120(Multileaf Collimator)

A enhancement to the linear accelerator, 120 precise moving leaves help shape the radiation field without requiring heavy lead block preparation and usage. Treatment is therefore faster, increasing patient comfort while allowing for more complex treatment designs. The MLC-120 is also capable of delivering high resolution IMRT with dynamic motion.
